Three cheers for Peter Carter and his column, titled ‘What we do together,’ in the March 31 edition of the Cape Gazette. The article mentions a group of knitters who gather at Panera to knit several times a week. If he had approached us (we are friendly), he would have learned we have been together for more than 10 years.
There is a group that knits on Wednesdays and another that knits on Fridays. Some of us knit in both groups. Most of us are on the other side of 60. Some knit for charities – chemo caps, hats, kids’ blankets and veterans’ lap blankets. Others knit for friends, relatives or themselves. One of us isn’t a knitter; she crochets.
As a group we have shared family weddings, serious medical diagnoses, joys and sorrows, widowhood, home maintenance problems, etc. Our friendships have deepened. Our skills have improved, too. Some of us have learned new knitting techniques and tricks of the trade. We’ve shared patterns and yarn, and received encouragement from each other on all projects attempted or completed. We support each other.
This group of knitters means a great deal to me, and I consider myself fortunate to be a part of it. Mr. Carter got it exactly right: Truly, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
