Cloud 9 sold, future plans unclear

No demolition permits on file in Rehoboth Beach
November 14, 2012

Popular Rehoboth Beach restaurant and nightclub Cloud 9 has been sold, but for now, the future of the property remains cloudy.

According to city records, Cloud 9 was purchased for $1.1 million by 234 Rehoboth Ave. LLC on June 29. The name listed on city records as the contact for the LLC is James Matthews of Arlington, Va. Matthews, who has a residence in Henlopen Acres, did not return calls for comment.

While there has been speculation the building would be demolished to make way for a commercial development, no demolition or building permits have been filed at Rehoboth’s building and licensing office.

Jack Cordrey, commissioner of the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, said there has been no change or change request for Cloud 9’s liquor license.

Cloud 9 was established in 1995 when it took over 234 Rehoboth from Philadelphia Mike’s. The restaurant became a favorite with the LGBT community for its late-night dancing and drag shows.

CAMP Rehoboth co-founder Steve Elkins said, "Since Cloud 9 opened in 1995, it has been an important part of the LGBT community, providing a great space to meet old and new friends. It will be missed by all of us."
