Coastal Georgetown AAUW awards scholarships

June 12, 2021

The Coastal Georgetown Branch of the American Association of University Women announced the winners of its three $2,000 scholarships.

Normally, each girl would have been awarded her scholarship at her high school’s senior awards ceremony. As these are not normal times, the chapter would like to publicly acknowledge the three 2021 winners: Maggie Dawson and Jhayden Holloman from Cape Henlopen High School, and Abby Wilson from Indian River High School.

Their $2,000 scholarships will be sent to their college/university for tuition/school expenses.

Abby Wilson, Indian River High School, has received the Virginia Rust Scholarship, named after the founder of the CGAAUW 64 years ago. Abby is a talented musician who has been part of the Indian River Concert Band, marching band and jazz band along with earning county and state music honors. She has also been a member of the drama club and appeared in school musicals. Abby’s community service has ranged from helping at the Atlantic Community Thrift Shop to tutoring fifth-grade students in music at Lord Baltimore Elementary School to serving with the National Honor Society, the Leo Club of Lions Club International and the student council. Abby will be attending James Madison University in the fall.

Cape Henlopen High School’s Jhayden Holloman is bound for Morgan State University. Jhayden has been involved in many Cape High activities including leading as senior class president, playing on the field hockey and basketball teams, and participating in the National Honor Society and AVID. Pathways to Success holds a special place for Jhayden through her volunteer work with that organization. All of these experiences have given her the opportunity to apply her strength and determination to compete, lead and display good sportsmanship.

Maggie Dawson, also a Cape Henlopen High School graduate, will be heading to the University of Tennessee this fall. Maggie was elected field hockey team captain for the 2020 season, leading them to another state title. She won the State of Delaware All Conference Award in 2019 and 2020. The Leo Club and the National Honor Society are also part of Maggie’s community service commitments. As a future educator, Maggie has been part of Educators Rising, a career-technical organization designed to prepare students for careers in education through competitions. Maggie earned third place and qualified for the national convention, but due to COVID-19 she was not able to participate.

The three $2,000 scholarships were available to female seniors planning to attend college/university in fall 2021 from Cape Henlopen, Indian River, Sussex Academy, Sussex Tech and/or Sussex Central high schools. In addition to a solid academic record, the girls had to demonstrate leadership with a strong resume of community service and volunteerism.

The Coastal Georgetown Branch of the American Association of University Women members are proud to be able to honor and congratulate these three scholarship winners. They have persevered this year, excelling academically and volunteering despite the difficulties presented by COVID-19. Congratulations!
