Blunt Rochester to join John Lewis film discussion Oct. 10

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will host a Zoom discussion on the documentary “John Lewis: Good Trouble” at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester will participate and share ways people can individually and collectively carry out Lewis’ legacy in Delaware. The discussion is in partnership with the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Peace Week showing of the film “John Lewis: Good Trouble” via virtual cinema through Oct. 10. The film is a poignant documentary that chronicles the moments in the late civil rights activist and U.S. representative’s life that have shaped his place in American history. Unitarian Universalists to meet Oct. 11

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold an online service at 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 11. Layers of Listening will be the topic. The reflection will consider opportunities for listening for some of these layers – facts, feelings, values, the call of the spirit, and the voice of the mystery. Blood drive in Rehoboth Beach Oct. 12

The Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council 7297 at St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach will sponsor an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 12 to 5 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12, in St. Edmond’s Parish Hall, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach. Donations are by appointment only; no walk-ins are permitted due to COVID-19. Appointments are spaced out to protect all involved. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800-733-2767 (REDCROSS), or go to RedCrossBlood.org and enter sponsor code: Star of the Sea Council 7297. All are welcome.

Auxiliary seeks donated items by Oct. 13

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28 will observe National Make a Difference Day by assembling emergency preparedness bags to distribute to the community. The auxiliary is seeking donations of the following items: flashlights (with batteries or solar), adhesive bandages, antibacterial cream, small wipe packs, hand sanitizers and first-aid kits. Most items can be found at dollar stores. Donations be dropped off anytime prior to Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the auxiliary office, American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Road, Millsboro. Hispanic heritage online through Oct. 15

Milton Public Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with virtual programs offered through Friday, Oct. 15. From children’s programs to author discussions, to food, music and dance programs, events are made possible with support from the Arsht-Cannon Fund. Estate Planning Mistakes webinar Oct. 19

The Delaware Money School will offer Common Estate Planning Mistakes, a free webinar, from 5 to 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 19, with instructors Deirdre O’Shea McCartney, Esq., and Robert Jeter. The class covers common estate planning mistakes and how to avoid them. It will explore some common myths about estate planning and offer suggestions on how attendees can optimize their financial future and legacy for their own and their loved ones’ benefit. Huntington's Disease Society virtual walk set Oct. 24

The Huntington's Disease Society of America's Mid-Atlantic Region is hosting the Delaware Virtual Team Hope Walk Saturday, Oct. 24. Walkers get to choose their own course in a driveway, neighborhood, house or treadmill. Team Hope is HDSA’s largest national grassroots fundraising event. Thousands of people walk together each year to support HDSA's fight to improve the lives of people affected by Huntington's Disease.

Ocean View VFW student essay contest deadline Oct. 31

Deadlines for entries into the VFW Auxiliary 7234 of Ocean View Patriot's Pen essays by students in sixth to eighth grade are due Saturday, Oct. 31, and also for Voice of Democracy audio essays by students in ninth to 12th grade. Continuing education scholarship entries are due Feb. 15. Creative Patriotic Art contest entries for students in ninth to 12th grade are due March 31. Illustrating America contest entries by students in kindergarten to eighth grade are due March 31. IRSD advisory board to meet online this year

The Indian River School District has scheduled its quarterly Community Advisory Board meetings for the 2020-21 school year. Meetings will be held virtually on Zoom at 7 p.m., Thursdays, Dec. 10, and March 18 and June 10, 2021, with location to be determined. The public is invited to participate in the meetings. The agenda for each meeting, along with Zoom instructions (if necessary), will be posted to the district website, www.irsd.net, two weeks in advance. The advisory board consists of community stakeholders who discuss special education services and consult with the court-appointed special master. Areas of discussion include academic and behavioral interventions for all district students, and inclusive practices across the district. 

Purnell graduates from Alabama

Lexus Purnell of Lewes received a bachelor of science degree in Commerce & Business Administration from the University of Alabama during its summer commencement July 31-Aug. 2.
