Community Briefs 5/3/23

May 3, 2023
Community health worker website launched

The Sussex County Health Coalition recently launched its new community health worker website at delawarechw.com, designed to promote the importance of CHWs in improving health outcomes in underserved communities.

The site provides valuable information on the role of CHWs in promoting health equity, including how they provide culturally competent health education, healthcare provider referrals and follow-up care. It also offers resources for individuals interested in becoming CHWs, including a free training program to become a certified CHW.

Training is specifically designed to equip individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to become effective CHWs, including communication, advocacy and cultural competency. Trainees will receive a stipend to support their commitment. Classes have already started, and more classes are scheduled in the near future.

Peggy Geisler, SCHC executive director, said, "CHWs are the backbone of community health promotion and are critical in addressing health inequities. We are excited to launch this new website and promote the free CHW training program to increase awareness about the significant role of CHWs in improving health outcomes and reducing health disparities in Sussex County."
