Concerned about removal of Route 16 traffic light

May 2, 2025

I share the concern with many other readers about the removal of the traffic light at the intersection of Route 16 and Route 1, and the impact it will have on drivers’ ability to safely navigate Route 1 through the various intersections and crossovers from Milton to Five Points.

Everyone who lives in Milton knows how difficult it is to enter Route 1 from Cave Neck Road, and entering Cave Neck Road from northbound Route 1 is especially difficult during the morning and evening rush hours. When the summer season kicks in, good luck getting onto Route 1 at all. The traffic light at Route 16 provides a buffer/opening to get onto Route 1 safely.

The Cave Neck Road/Route 1 intersection is on DelDOT’s list for a redesign in the next 5-10 years. Minos Conaway (another dangerous intersection) is scheduled for reconstruction within five years. In the near future, we will see the true impact on safety from the traffic light removal at Route 16. Hopefully, DelDOT will have a meaningful game plan if the safety of this roadway is compromised due to this removal.
