Correction about Lewes Fire Department funding

December 26, 2023

In regard to the article in the Cape Gazette written by Aaron R. Mushrush dated Feb. 28, I am writing to provide corrections. The article incorrectly states that Sussex County funds 50% of our budget, when in reality this figure is only 13%. Additionally, we are replacing our 2002 85-foot ladder truck with a new 2023 100-foot ladder truck.

It is a common misconception that our fire and EMS services rely heavily on taxes paid to Sussex County, when in fact only a small portion of our funds comes from there. To make up the difference, we are currently running a donation drive for our ambulance fund. We hope that all members of the community will take the time to review this and make a donation where possible, as budget restraints and an increasing number of emergencies have left us in need of support.
