As one of the 100-plus Moms Who Demand Action for Gun Sense in America who attended the Delaware Senate Judiciary Committee hearing April 26, I found your publication’s reporting on the issue lacking. Senate Bill 2, the permit-to-purchase legislation, adds important protections to the current laws in Delaware. Currently, a person can state that they have applied for a background check and in three days can purchase a handgun. This bill requires that a person actually pass the background check. Additionally, this bill requires that a person complete a handgun safety course, which includes information about safe storage of the weapon, which is most important if children are in the home. This bill provides that law enforcement can deny permits to those who pose a danger to public safety. How incredibly important is it to know that the leading cause of death in our children is death by guns.
