Crab steaming truck sets up shop at Atlantic Liquors

Blue crab enthusiasts will have convenient access to this local delicacy when the #1 Fresh Steamed Crabs truck rolls onto the grounds of Atlantic Liquors beginning Thursday, April 15.
Delaware native and former commercial crabber Carlos Batres said he had been selling crabs from his pickup at the Valero on Route 24 across from Peddlers Village when he came up with the idea to convert a landscape utility trailer into a one-of-a-kind crab steaming truck.
“There are lots of food trucks out there,” Batres said. “But Delaware Public Health told me this crab steaming truck is the only one in Delaware.”
The crab truck’s location outside Atlantic Liquors is perfect, Batres said. “You gotta have beer with crabs!”
Batres said he doesn’t use Old Bay seasoning; he uses a Bayou seasoning he discovered while living in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas that he personalized with his own touches to steam and season his crabs.
Crabs are locally sourced, he said, and beginning in June, he will also offer crabs from Crisfield, Md., the town dubbed the crab capital of the world. Prices will fluctuate with the market, he said, but he aims to keep prices for No. 1s at $55 or less a dozen.
“Prices are like Wall Street,” he said. “They go up and down depending on what they’re catching out there.”
Batres said he will also offer live crabs, private catering and delivery.
