For the past four years, Delawareans have been under-served by our current insurance commissioner. She has ignored Delaware consumers and sided with insurance companies too many times. But we now have a chance to get a real consumer advocate in office. That person is Mitch Crane.
Mitch is a former judge and served as the acting director of consumer services and investigations at the insurance commission until he retired in January 2011. His work was praised by the incumbent insurance commissioner and by legislators from both sides of the aisle.
Mitch opposed the takeover of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Delaware by Highmark of Pennsylvania because he knew it would be bad for Delaware consumers. Mitch will push for legislation to ban the use of credit scores in determining eligibility for insurance coverage and insurance premiums. He will push for legislation to ban discrimination against women when they apply for health insurance and seniors when they apply for, or renew, their auto insurance policies.
Mitch was also endorsed by the Delaware Democratic Party at its convention in June, along with the New Castle Couny and Kent County Democratic parties. He is also supported by the Delaware State Education Association and scores of elected officials from all three counties. They are supporting Mitch because they recognize that a change is needed, a change to someone who will fight to protect the consumer.
It’s time we had someone who will put the consumer first. It’s time that we have an insurance commissioner who will represent the people of Delaware, and not the insurance companies. We need Mitch Crane as our next insurance commissioner. Please join me in voting for Mitch Crane in the Democratic primary Tuesday, Sept. 11.
