Updated 4 p.m., Nov. 9: Delaware State Police continue to investigate a two-vehicle crash that occurred at 9:43 a.m., Nov. 9 on Route 1 southbound at Route 24.

A 1998 International concrete mixer was traveling southbound on Route 1 just south of Route 24 when a 2008 Mercury Mariner car was traveling northbound in the left turn lane of Route 1. Police say for unknown reasons, the Mariner left the travel lane, crossed a concrete median and entered the southbound lane, where it struck the front of the concrete mixer.

The driver of the car, Tracie L. Barry, 48, of Lewes, was properly restrained and trapped in the vehicle. She was extricated by emergency crews and the Sussex County Technical Response Team and taken to Beebe Healthcare. She was later transferred to Christiana Hospital, where she is listed in serious but stable condition. Christiana Hospital listed her in critical condition on Nov. 12.

The driver of the cement mixer, a 34-year-old Dover man, was properly restrained and taken to Beebe Healthcare, where he was treated and released with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Route 1 was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Firefighters and emergency medical technicians needed around an hour to extract the driver of the Mariner. A crowd of onlookers watched as emergency personnel worked. Traffic was rerouted around the area.

The crash continues to be under investigation. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
