David Gerald Mooney, Chrysler retiree
David Gerald Mooney, 82, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family Saturday, May 31, 2025. Born Feb. 13, 1943, in Etna, Pa., son of the late Grace and Peter J. Mooney. Dave married the love of his life, Irene, Oct. 24, 1964, with whom he shared a devoted and joyful life.
Dave worked as a superintendent at the Chrysler plant and retired after 30-plus years of dedicated service. He also worked tirelessly with both of his sons, assisting and helping them whenever he could on their business ventures. Dave also always found a way to make anything work with ingenuity and whatever was on hand. Outside of work, he enjoyed several hobbies, including playing pool—something he proudly passed down to his sons and grandsons—baking, boating, crabbing, and fishing from the pontoon boat. Most of all, he loved dancing with Irene.
In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Grace; and brothers, Ken and Les. He is survived by his beloved wife, Irene; his sons, David G. Mooney, Jr. and Eric G. Mooney (Suzayn); his cherished grandsons, Dylan and Dalton; and a host of extended family.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, June 6, at St. Ann’s Parish, 691 Garfield Pkwy., Bethany Beach, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 32112 Vines Creek Road, Dagsboro.
Dave will be remembered for his fierce loyalty and deep love for his family, a strong work ethic, and the joyful moments he created for everyone. His quick wit, the ability to tell a story, and his joking personality will be sorely missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, stjude.org/give/memorials-and-dedications.html.
