David M. Seiler, loved all things sports

David M. Seiler, 80, of Ocean View, formerly of Mitchellville, Md., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Thursday, Oct. 17, 201,9 at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes.

He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., Jan. 27, 1939, son of the late Herbert Seiler and Beatrice (Spoth) Seiler.  David received his bachelor’s degree in police administration from American University in Washington, D.C.  

David began his career with the Metropolitan Police Department in 1961, retiring in 1980 as a sergeant.  He then worked as a highway safety specialist for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration retiring in 2007.  David was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Association of Retired Police Officers in Washington, D.C.

He loved all things sports. David is recognized in the city of Buffalo Athletic Hall of Fame as a basketball player for his high school in 1957.  He was also a longtime coach at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Md., and the Lanham Boys & Girls Club where he also served as past president.  David was a fervent Redskins fan, holding season tickets since 1961 and a loyal Nationals fan. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Seiler.  David is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Kathleen M. (Gillis) Seiler; five children, Mary K. Snow of Leesburg, Va., David H. Seiler of Baltimore, Md., Andrew J. Seiler and his wife Terri of Stevensville, Md., Timothy M. Seiler of Waldorf, Md., and Matthew E. Seiler and his wife Kim of Kensington, Md.; nine grandchildren, Betsy Milburn and her husband Ryan, Aaron Seiler, Jonathan Snow and his wife Melissa, Henry Seiler, Zachary Seiler, Anthony Seiler, Eric Seiler, Matthew Seiler and Nicole Seiler; and a great-grandson, Aaron Seiler Jr.  David is also survived by two brothers, Alan Seiler and his wife Rose Marie of Sarasota, Fla., and Larry Seiler and his wife Rosanne of Michigan; a sister-in-law, Pauline Seiler of Amherst, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, where friends and family may visit after 10 a.m.  Interment will be held privately at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in David’s memory to Gonzaga College High School, Attn. Advancement Office, 19 Eye St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20001.
