Delaware Black History: Shine a Light in Rehoboth Feb. 7

January 24, 2020

CAMP Rehoboth and the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice are collaborating to host Shine a Light Friday, Feb. 7, at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center. An art reception at 6 p.m. will be followed by a 7 p.m. panel discussion.

Sussex County’s history of slavery, Jim Crow laws, segregation and discrimination reflects much of the history of the South in this country. In spite of these obstacles, African American community members have shown strength, resilience and achievement. Too often, these are the untold stories.

In keeping with the theme of Shine a Light, the panel discussion will reveal what life was like for African Americans growing up in various parts of Sussex County. Five remarkable people – Jacqueline Goodwin, Clem Jordan, Stell Parker-Selby, Ruth Palmer and Waynne Paskins – will serve as panelists to share their stories and experiences.

Panel moderator Don Peterson, who chairs the outreach committee of Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, said, "The alliance is delighted to be in a continuing partnership with CAMP Rehoboth, working together on a variety of projects and programs focusing on racial justice and discrimination."

Shine a Light, a corollary art exhibition in the CAMP Rehoboth Gallery, will bring light to that which is often hidden. Using light as a metaphor, this exhibit will bring attention to the talents of black artists and the fullness of black humanity. Through broad brush strokes, textiles and their personal lens, the exhibiting artists will share their interpretations and bring focus to the strength, resilience, achievement and creativity of African Americans.

"CAMP Rehoboth is thrilled to be partnering again with SDARJ,” said CAMP Rehoboth Board Vice President Leslie Sinclair. “Our intent through this art exhibition is to give voice to the discussion, and in addition, create an ongoing dialogue."

CAMP Rehoboth works to build safe, inclusive communities with room for all. The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality, and fair opportunity. For more information, go to www.camprehoboth.com and www.sdarj.org
