The host team from Delaware District 3 finished up pool play in the Senior League Softball World Series with a 3-2 win over Asia-Pacific July 31 at Roxana’s Lyons Field.
The defense ruled the afternoon, as Makenna Blades stood tall in the circle and went the distance, allowing eight hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out two batters.
Larny Joy Aquino and Erica Arnaiz teamed in the circle for Asia-Pacific, giving up a combined six hits and striking out four batters.
Delaware got on the scoreboard first when Adeline Lutz grounded into a fielder's choice, Karly Kruger singled down the right field line and Cierra Lewis walked. All three came around to home plate for a 3-0 lead.
Kruger and Lewis each had an RBI for Delaware. Taylor Lowe slammed a triple. Lutz, Kimora Harris and Adrianna Heck each had a hit.
Each team’s defense played tough, keeping the other from scoring until the sixth inning, when Asia-Pacific scored one. The squad from the Philippines added another run in the seventh.
Asia-Pacific’s Audrie Sarsona, Nice Lobrido and Erica Arnaiz each delivered two hits. Daniela Bejos and Erica Arnaiz each had an RBI.
Asia-Pacific had a final threat with a runner on second and two outs in the bottom of the seventh. An Asia-Pacific batter drove a hot grounder to shortstop, but it hit the runner for the final out of the game.
The District 3 squad will play the winner of Canada versus Europe-Africa at 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1.
