Delaware Pharmacists Society names Bruce Benton honorary president

November 11, 2022

The Delaware Pharmacists Society Council of Presidents has chosen Bruce Benton as the 2022 Delaware Pharmacists Society honorary president.

The society’s main office in Smyrna, known as the Levin Center, was full of friends and colleagues Oct. 8 to celebrate Benton.

Also honored that evening were Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro as the 2022 Friend of Pharmacy and Heidi Lueking as the 2022 Bowl of Hygiea winner.

After graduation from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1971, Benton started his career with Thrift Drug. In 1980, he was hired as a staff pharmacist for Edgehill Drugs, where he quickly climbed the corporate ladder to become executive vice president. He remained in that position until 1999.

Benton served on the Delaware Pharmacists Society board as the Sussex County representative from 1985 to 1997, chairing the legislative committee. He represented Delaware on national committees, such as the McKesson Small Chain Advisory Board. Today he is a staff pharmacist at Seaford Pharmacy, where he enjoys the personal relationships he has cultivated with his patients and staff. Many pharmacists under his mentorship became active members of DPS and shared stories of their time working with him at the event. Benton is a true innovator in the world of Delaware pharmacy.

Navarro received the Friend of Pharmacy Award for his devotion to protecting the public from the wrongful acts of insurance companies and pharmacy plan managers.

Lueking received the pharmacy community service award, the Bowl of Hygiea, for all the time she volunteered to give COVID-19 vaccines at numerous public health events.
