Delaware South softball wins Carpenter Cup title

The Delaware South softball team won the Carpenter Cup championship July 13 in Philadelphia. The downstate squad pulled out a 4-3 win over Mid-Penn.

The Carpenter Cup is hosted annually by the Philadelphia Phillies, bringing together regional teams from Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Games are held at FDR Park near the sports complex in South Philly. 

Madge Layfield of Sussex Central was the winning pitcher, recording seven strikeouts. Delmarva Christian’s Kandice Schlabach connected for a two-run single in the sixth inning. 

Delaware South opened the tournament June 22 with a 13-0 win over Chester County, Pa. They followed that up with three wins June 23: 20-0 over Jersey Shore, 13-7 over Tri Cape and 12-7 over Delaware North.
