Delaware State Hornets show real progress at William & Mary Invitational

Congratulations to the women’s golf team of Delaware State University for their 11th-place finish at the William & Mary Invitational tournament, held Sept. 12-13 at Kings Mill Resort’s River Course in Williamsburg, VA.

The Lady Hornets posted a 294 total in the first round, good for fifth place at that point in the three-round event. Head coach Rick McCall Jr. said this total (using scores of 72, 73, 74, and 75) set a new program record. “I’m so proud of the growth of this team,” he said.

Anna Ferreyra-Heit, an Argentinian transfer from Bethune-Cookman, led the Hornets with her T-29 finish. Amber Pennington and Nattavadee Khunsri tied for 35th, Estelle Verny tied for 57th, and Jirada Kluaymaingarm finished T-70.
The team’s upcoming fall schedule includes the Navy Invitational Oct. 2-3 and a trip to Rehoboth Beach Country Club Oct. 16-17 for the University of Delaware’s Battle at the Beach.

Rain gear for warmer weather

The folks at Galway Bay Golf recently sent me one of their All-Weather short-sleeve jackets to test. It passed with flying colors, especially in the wet and warm conditions of the Cape Region in late August/early September.

A series of tropical storms/former Gulf Coast hurricanes slogged through the local area recently. I am not silly enough to play golf in torrential downpours and high winds, but sometimes the rain and wind was only enough to need something to wear over my regular golf outfits. Prior rain jacket experience in these conditions, especially the full-sleeved variety, produced just as much moisture inside the coat from trapped heat as I was allegedly protected against on the outside.

The Galway Bay short-sleeve design, however, provided plenty of rain protection while also keeping the air flow going through the open sleeves. The proprietary Hydro-Flex 32 fabric is lightweight, breathable, and stretchy. The jacket’s design easily accommodated my long, full golf swings. I never felt restricted, and I can’t say that about other rain jackets I have used. The zippers are rubberized and provide a good seal against rain. I don’t use the chest cellphone pocket during the round, but it did a nice job of keeping the device dry before and after.

Apparently other reviewers agree. MyGolfSpy awarded Galway Bay’s All-Weather line its 2021 Best Rain Wear Under $500. The full line includes long-sleeve jackets and pants in four color combinations: black-on-black, black-on-sage, Old Glory blue, and gray. A short-sleeve white jacket with black accents is also offered.

The rain gear is available online at galwaybaygolf.com. Current prices range from $229 to$299 for the jackets and $79 to $184 for the pants. The company also expects to see its products in select golf shops.

3rd Annual Buckets of Love Foundation tournament Oct. 1

Reagan Garnsey of Wild Quail Golf & Country Club won this year’s Delaware State Golf Association Junior Girls Championship at Mulligan’s Pointe on July 9. The 14-year-old is expected to join the Caesar Rodney high school golf team, where she should help maintain the persistently high ranking of the Kent County squad.

Several years ago, Reagan and her younger sister Payton created the Buckets of Love Foundation to give back to the community. The two young women and their friends and supporters raise funds to assist children undergoing hospital care, residing in homeless shelters throughout the state, or otherwise facing difficult situations. The money raised fills foundation buckets with age-appropriate toys, games and crafts for distribution to the recipients.

The foundation’s golf tournament is the primary fundraising tool, and the third edition is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 1, at Wild Quail.

The $95 per person, $385 per foursome entry fee covers the golf, practice range, carts, prizes, food and giveaways. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., and three food stations on the course.

Golf and sponsorship packages remain available. Non-golfing volunteers are also welcome to assist in running the event and cheering on the golfers.

Milford Lions Host 22nd Annual Leonard B. Donohoe Memorial Golf Tourney

The Milford Lions Club will hold its 22nd Annual Leonard B. Donohoe Memorial Golf Tournament at Jonathan’s Landing in Magnolia Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The Lions seek both golfers and sponsors for the event.

The $80 per golfer fee pays for golf with cart, 2 mulligans, 2 putting contest chances, a continental breakfast, buffet lunch, soda and water on course, a goody bag, and door prizes.

Prizes will be awarded for up to three places for low net, the putting contest, and a closest-to-the-pin challenge.

Local club competition results

The Mulligan’s Pointe Ladies 18-hole group played a Crier’s tournament Sept. 14.

Karen Feuchtenberger won Division A, with Carmella Boyle in second and Mary Louise York in third. Chris Allison won Division B, followed by Carol Love in second and Donna Dolce in third.
