Delaware veterans deserve a strong voice

August 22, 2025

Veterans from across Delaware gathered Aug. 13 at the American Legion in Smyrna to celebrate a milestone — the creation of a Department of Veterans Affairs. Signed into law by Gov. Matt Meyer, the new cabinet-level office was made possible through the unanimous passage of House Bill 1.

The department, to be staffed by veterans, will provide the state’s 70,000 former service members with dedicated care, specialized services and strong advocacy. Legislators from both parties worked together to bring this vision forward, recognizing that veterans deserve not only gratitude, but also meaningful access to the benefits they have earned.

For years, the Cape Gazette has heard the concerns of local veterans’ groups and helped publicize available services in Sussex County. Despite these efforts, many veterans — including some who remain unhoused — are still not receiving the support they need. A dedicated department is an important step toward addressing these gaps.

The sacrifices made by veterans cannot be measured. The least we can do is ensure they fully understand, locate, and receive the benefits and services promised to them.

We applaud the bipartisan leadership that brought this department into being and echo the words of Sen. Dave Lawson: It must make things better for the next generation of veterans. The creation of this office is a strong start. Now, its success will depend on delivering results that improve the lives of every Delaware veteran.
