DelDOT selects design for Route 1 overpass at Cave Neck Road

Virtual hearing is scheduled on interchange design May 20
May 18, 2020

Delaware Department of Transportation officials have selected a preferred alternative for the Route 1-Cave Neck Road interchange. Construction of the interchange is still five years away.

Under the proposed design, Cave Neck Road will go over Route 1, extending onto property east of Route 1 where two housing developments have been approved.

After public input, officials made a change to the proposed design by adding a frontage road east of Route 1 connecting Cave Neck Road and Willow Creek Road.

A frontage road on the western side of Route 1 was already included in the design.

Access to existing parcels and neighborhoods in the vicinity of the interchange will be via on- and off-ramps and the frontage roads.

Residents who live along Fox Run Lane just north of the intersection will no longer have direct access to Route 1, but will instead access the new interchange via the west-side frontage road to Cave Neck Road.

The design includes roundabouts on the east and west side of the interchange.

DelDOT officials said right-of-way acquisition will take place in 2022, and they expect a final design in 2023 with construction taking place from 2025 through 2026.

Information on the preferred alternative will be posted on the deldot.gov website under projects until Friday, June 5. A live question-and-answer session will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 20, via ZoomMonkey video conferencing.

Questions can be submitted ahead of time to dotpublic@delaware.gov or by phoning 302-760-2080.

Questions during the live session will be accepted using the Zoom chat function.
