DelDOT should remove Route 1 crossovers

August 6, 2024

We've recently had two serious crossover crashes on Route 1 between Cave Neck Road and the Nassau Bridge. Both crashes were the result of driver inattention and speeding.

I counted 10 crossovers between Cave Neck Road and the bottom of the Nassau Bridge. Do we really need 10 crossovers for a two-mile stretch? Probably not!

Perhaps a solution to these crashes and safety on the road is to remove some of the crossovers. It’s an easy fix – install concrete barriers. Some people will complain that removal of the crossovers will result in them driving an extra quarter-mile. If it reduces crashes and promotes safety, so be it.

I know that the DelDOT long-term plans call for the reconstruction/renovations of some of these crossovers, but we are light-years away from that.

Something needs to be done in the interim. Removal of some of the crossovers, installing amber lights and signage advising drivers of a dangerous intersection, enforcing the speed limit, etc. Something needs to be done as opposed to sitting back and waiting for the next crash. It’s not a matter of if, but when.
