Delmarva Christian softball defeats Lake in wild fashion

Royals celebrate seniors in a crazy game
May 9, 2023

A pitchers’ duel broke out at the May 9 softball game between Delmarva Christian and Lake Forest. Scoreless through the first six-and-a-half innings, the Royals loaded the bases with two outs. A passed ball on a third strike sent the winning run home for a 1-0 Royals victory.

“As a team, we had a lot of energy,” said Royals coach Rachel Fetterman. “That's a good thing. We stayed up every inning. We missed some signs and a few early opportunities to score. We didn't let it take us out of the game; we kept trying to make adjustments. Kaylan [Yoder] was strong and focused in the circle, so that kept us pumped up. We knew we had to keep finding ways to get on [base], and the bottom of the seventh, we had bases loaded. I had confidence in Taylor [Lowe]; she chased a decent pitch, and the rest is history. Catcher missed it and we scored. Not the best win, but a win nonetheless. We'll take it. With it being Senior Night and last regular-season home game, it made it that much better.”

Yoder struck out 20 batters; she now has 216 strikeouts on the season. The Spartans only managed one hit off the senior captain.

Lake Forest pitcher Carah Sumpter struck out eight batters while allowing four hits.

The Royals are now 12-2 on the season, with both losses coming to Caravel Academy (11-1). They will travel to Dover Saturday, May 13.
