Delmarva Christian softball outlasts IR in extra innings

Royals open season with three wins over Henlopen Conference teams
March 28, 2023

It may have been a cold, dreary day March 27, but it was a day to remember for Delmarva Christian senior Kaylan Yoder, as she delivered in both the pitching circle and at the plate. Yoder allowed just one hit, struck out 17 batters, slammed two doubles and scored both of the Royals’ runs in the 2-1 extra-inning win over Indian River.

The Indians were ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the the seventh when Yoder delivered a double. She was moved up to third, then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Rachel Hall. The game went to the bottom of the ninth, when Yoder once again stepped to the plate.

“The outfield moved back toward the fence after I hit the first double,” said Yoder. “So I just wanted to poke it over the infielders’ heads.”

She moved to third on a bunt by Royals third baseman Lily Hutt and scored on an errant throw from home to third.

“I like to swing away. I’ll admit that,” Hutt said. “I just knew it wasn’t about me. But I knew I had to get the ball in play.”

“It was a big win,” said new Royals coach Rachel Fetterman. “I told Kaylan I wanted her to take a big lead on third and make something happen. She did just that.”

The Royals host Mardela Thursday, March 30, while the Indians play Sussex Central at the Del Tech Campus.
