Delta Sigma Theta Sussex alumnae serve as Santa’s helpers

Members brighten holidays for youth served by local nonprofits

At Christmastime, the Sussex County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. members were busy acting as Santa’s helpers, giving to youth in foster care and other charities servicing youth in Sussex County.

Chapter members and community elves organized and implemented numerous projects. Their Christmas sleigh delivered to African American kids experiencing foster care in Sussex County, Boys & Girls Club of Dagsboro, Delaware Guidance Services of Lewes, and Children and Families First in Georgetown.

SCAC elf Patricia Jackson, chair of the community action committee, presented Visa gift card donations to the Court Appointed Special Advocate State Director Melissa Palokas for 17 African American children experiencing foster care in Sussex County. Cards ranged from $25 to $50 in value. This is the chapter’s second annual donation to help brighten smiles for these vulnerable and deserving children. To support CASA, go to

The Christmas Store Committee sponsored by Gemez and Fel Norwood and Tyniece Norwood of Millsboro, and Betty Harmon, director of the Dagsboro Boys & Girls Club, hosted the 13th annual Christmas Store to benefit the club Dec. 4. More than 40 kids signed up to shop for free toys and other items suitable to give as presents for parents and grandparents.

The Dagsboro Boys & Girls Club provides a safe environment where kids experience life-changing programs as they play, learn and grow. To donate to initiatives for the club, email The other volunteer elves consisted of community members, SCAC of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and the Psi Iota Chapter of Dover Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The elves assisted the kids in following COVID protocols as well as selecting and wrapping the gifts.

The SCAC sleigh also stopped at Delaware Guidance Services in Lewes Dec. 9 and donated boxes of toys. Most were donated by members of the Planation Lakes development in Millsboro. DGS is Delaware's largest provider of non-residential mental health services for children and families. To learn more, go to

SCAC’s final sleigh toy delivery was to Children & Families First in Georgetown. The organization strengthens Delaware families by delivering an innovative and effective continuum of community-based social services. To learn more, go to

The spirit of giving continued when the chapter held an event to support the Delaware Adolescent Program Inc. in Georgetown. The chapter adopted three DAPI families for the holidays. DAPI is an alternative fresh start for pregnant teens to receive the health and social services they need to continue education during and after pregnancy. To learn more, go to

The SCAC Sussex County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority strives to support the Sussex County community by sponsoring public service activities, supporting other nonprofit organizations, and providing scholarships to Sussex County high school seniors.
