Dewey Beer Co. hosts pet adoption event

Dewey Beer Co. joined forces with Humane Animal Partners March 20 to host an all-day pet adoption event called “Dewey Gives 20.” 

From 12 to 9 p.m., beer and animal lovers alike had the opportunity to help homeless pets find forever homes while enjoying drinks and food and participating in giveaways and raffle baskets. 

At the end of the night, 20% of all taproom sales were donated to HAP to support animals in need. According to Harrison Albert, the creative director at Dewey Beer Co., a total of $714 was donated. 

“We’re trying to get some recognition to get some good dogs adopted,” said Charles Norris, the manager at Dewey Beer Co. “The ability to get a bunch of people together in one spot all for the same cause is why we’re here. We’re serving good food and good beer, but at the same time we’re making a good atmosphere for everybody too. We are ensuring that we’re all having a good time, while also allowing information about HAP to be spread.” 

HAP has had Lola, a shepherd mix, in the shelter for two months, and Vicky, a black lab mix, for one month. Both of the adorable dogs were connected with potential owners at the event and will likely be moved into new homes soon. 

“The event was great,” said Leigh McKinley, center director of HAP in Rehoboth Beach. “We brought four dogs, and it looks like two of them might be adopted tomorrow. A 50% adoption rate is a huge success. We’re so excited.”

The HAP Rehoboth Beach location normally has about 12 to 14 dogs and 13 to 15 cats at a time. The local shelter receives a new transfer of pets from the Wilmington location weekly in search for animal lovers who are willing to adopt homeless dogs and cats.
