Donald Thomas McDonough, veteran, million-dollar smile

May 7, 2025

Donald “Mac” Thomas McDonough, 85, of Milford, peacefully passed away at home Tuesday, May 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Don was born March 12, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Thomas and Blanche (Cannon) McDonough. He was raised in Glenside, Pa., and then Virginia Beach, Va., before moving to Towson, Md., in his high school years.

He graduated from Towson High School in 1958 before receiving an associate’s degree from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1960. In 1962, he graduated from University of Virginia with a bachelor of science degree in commerce.

Don honorably served our country in the Army from 1963-65 and was assigned to the 16th Artillery – 4th Armored Division, in Zirndorf, Germany, where he proudly retired as a first lieutenant.

In 1965, he married his high school sweetheart, Stephanie, and began his career in petroleum sales at Texaco Inc., located in Baltimore, Md., and Delaware. He then switched careers and joined Unijax/Unisource Inc. out of Norfolk, Va.  Before retiring at 74, he finished his career working for one of his former customers, State Janitorial Supply Co., in Dover. Don’s million-dollar smile won over many customers, who also became friends.

He was a member of Milford Lions Club, St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, and the American Legion.

More than anything, Don loved spending time with his family, including the many celebrations and family vacations. Don enjoyed golfing with his buddies, Tom and Vern, and loved traveling the world with his best friend, Stephanie.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Stephanie (Goode) McDonough; his children, Kelly Barnett and her husband Bryan, Michael T. McDonough and his partner Ulla Harlow, and Kathleen Archino and her partner Eric Williams; his grandchildren, Lilly and Summer Barnett, Reilly Williamson and her husband Ricky, Sam Archino, and El, Lucy and Katie Williams; his great-grandchildren, Rowan and Patrick Williamson; and his many special nieces, nephews and cousins.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Blanche Upton and her son Kirk Upton; his brother-in-law, William H. Goode; and his cousin from across the pond, Michael “Mick” Cannon of Malahide, Ireland.

The family will receive visitors from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 15, at Rogers Hovatter Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 16, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 506 Seabury Ave., Milford. Interment will be private.
