Dover boys and Smyrna girls win team indoor track titles

Cape’s 4-by-800 relay wins conference title

The Dover boys and Smyrna girls turned in dominating performances Jan. 25 at the Henlopen Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Worcester County Parks and Recreation Center near Snow Hill, Md.

The Senators boys of coach Jim Solomon scored 168 points followed by Caesar Rodney with 128, Smyrna with 92, Cape with 49, Lake Forest with 14 and Sussex Tech with 8.

The Smyrna girls of coach Maura Schafer dominated the field with 206 points followed by Caesar Rodney with 92, Dover with 85, Lake Forest with 39, Cape with 26, Sussex Tech with 4 and Seaford with 2.

The Cape boys crowned conference champions in the 4-by-800 with a team of Greg Boyce, Owen Allen, Cesar Campos and Gabe Best, who ran a combined time of 8:54.5.  

Kenny Witherspoon was champion in the high jump with a personal best jump of 5-feet-10-inches.

Cape’s Ce’yra Middleton won the shot put with a throw of 37-feet-11-inches, while teammate Mackenzie Parker of Cape was third in 34-feet-6-inches.

Other point producers for the Cape boys included: Owen Allen sixth in 800 in 2:14, Greg Boyce third in 1,600 in 4:43, Isaiah Fillyau sixth in 55 hurdles in 8.7, Jordan Keener fifth in high jump in 5-feet-2-inches, Ryan Head tied for fourth in pole vault in 10-feet-6-inches, Curtis Purnell fourth in long jump in 19-feet-11-inches, Garrett Elgin sixth in triple jump in 39-feet-7-inches, and Patrick Tkach fourth in shot put in 38-feet-9-inches.

Cape also placed fifth in the 4-by-200 in 1:40.9 and third in the 4-by-400 in 4:02.  

Other point producers for the girls’ team included: Timesha Cannon sixth in 55 dash in 7.95 and fifth in long jump in 15-feet-5-inches, and Taylor Johnson sixth in the 1,600 in 6:00.

Cape placed third in the 4-by-200 relay in 1:59.9.

Notes: Smyrna’s Naomi Bowser went beast mode, winning the pole vault at 10-feet even, the 1,600 in 5:24, the 800 in 2:24, and she anchored the winning 4-by-800 team in 10:12.

Destiny Bailey-Perkins of Caesar Rodney won four open events, including the 55-meter in 7.43, 200 in 26.0, 400 in 60.0 and the long jump 18-feet-5-inches.

Dover’s Jakari Long won the 55 dash in 6.6 and the 200 in 23.4. Dover’s Gavin Williams claimed the 1,600 in 4:41 and the 3,200 in 10:32.

Delaware’s DIAA Indoor State Championships are set for Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Prince George’s Sports Complex in Maryland.
