Edgar Lee Hitch, family storyteller

October 21, 2020

Edgar Lee Hitch, 85, died peacefully Monday, Oct. 19, 2020, in his home in Lewes.

While growing up in Middletown, Edgar learned early on what it meant to work hard and to embrace his inner curiosities, sometimes leading him to trouble. Using his natural-born talents, he began to build a life filled with love of family and friends. During his younger years, Edgar had a passion for going to Philly and racing cars.

He started working at the Acme when he was 15, but even before that he worked hard on the farm. Edgar worked up to the age of 75, because he loved working and being in the thick of things. Even at the end of his career, he did not want to retire. He most enjoyed working for his son, Ed, at ShureLine Electrical. Edgar also found an interest in traveling, dancing the night away on Saturday nights with his wife Nancy D., and hosting family barbecues and holiday parties. One of Edgar’s famous interests was people watching - at a mall, the boardwalk, Lewes beach or even while sitting outside on the front porch. Edgar was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge #5 in Middletown. Edgar will be remembered as one of the best family storytellers of all time.

Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas and Mary H. (West) Hitch; siblings, Sara Ann, Tommy, Paul, Bill, Elizabeth, best friend and brother-in-law, Elmer Hall; and special cousin, Iona Vickers.

Edgar is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 31 years, Nancy D.; children, Ed (Jean), Judy Massey (Bernie), John (Donna), Yvonne Bistany and Jeanette Lennon; sister-in-law, Linda McKay; sister, Edith Hall; eight grandchildren, Brian (Kate), John, Jill, Josh (Ana), Kyle, E. Kyle (fiancé, Miranda), Erik and Sean; six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins; and his four-legged friends, Bailey and Sydney.

Services will be private. Interment will be privately held with immediate family at Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. The family is planning to hold a memorial service in July 2021, post COVID-19.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to Paws for Life, PO Box 407, Chesapeake City, MD 21915.
