Efforts to clean Sussex’s roadways an ongoing battle

March 1, 2023

I was really glad to see the editorial, “Take action to clean up Sussex roadways,” in the Feb. 17 edition. Being involved in the Adopt-A-Highway program is a good thing, but it can also be frustrating at times. DelDOT does a great job of getting you set up with the right tools to do the job. You and your group go out, clean your assigned area, and it feels good to see the countryside restored to its natural beauty! The frustrating part comes when you see the area that you are taking pride in, a week later, building up again. I tell myself to not give up, others will see what a difference a little effort will make, and who knows, they might even join in. After several times of the same pattern of ongoing litter, I ask myself and the group, are we the only ones who care? Then one day an article/editorial, like the one mentioned above, pops up like a ray of light on a cloudy and somewhat gloomy day!

Thanks, Sussex County, for recognizing the problem with too much litter and making an effort to keep it under control. And thanks, Cape Gazette, for another great article!
