Eleanor Jane Huber, retired teacher

March 5, 2020

Eleanor Jane Huber, 90, of Lewes, and formerly of Wilmington, passed on to eternal rest surrounded by her family, Monday, March 2, 2020, at her home.  She was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Mount Vernon, Ill., daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Carpenter) Clark.

Eleanor moved frequently in her youth due to her father’s work with wartime construction and landed in Wilmington in 1941, where at the age of 12 she first met the future love of her life, Vernon Francis Huber. After several more moves around the country, she settled in Arizona during her high school years. Following high school, Eleanor attended Arizona State University for two years before reconnecting with Vernon soon after he was discharged from the U.S. Navy in May 1948.  They were married in Yuma, Ariz., June 19, 1948, a union that flourished for nearly 73 years. Eleanor and Vernon settled outside of Wilmington in the Stanton area, where she was a loving mother to her three sons Chris, Steve and Dan.

Eleanor always wanted to be a teacher and in 1962 enrolled at the University of Delaware to complete her studies, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees with distinction and being named the Outstanding Student in the Department of Education. In 1965 she began a teaching career at Stanton Central Elementary that spanned 25 years, before her retirement from Forest Oak Elementary in 1990. Eleanor taught second grade and in the elementary gifted/talented program.

In her retirement years Eleanor had many loves including sewing and needlework, music, cooking and gardening. If you stopped by the house in Lewes in the summer you were sure find two things: Eleanor on her knees in the yard tending to her flowers and the smell of something good cooking in the kitchen. If she was not home you could be sure to find her at the Midway Movie Theater, where she worked with Vernon for 20 years, before retiring again in 2013. Eleanor loved to travel and did so extensively throughout the United States and Europe. From her winter residence in St. Petersburg, Fla., she cruised to many of the islands of the Caribbean and South Pacific. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes and was also a member of the Naomi (Wilmington) and Unity (Lewes) chapters of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as a Past Grand Ada and Worthy Matron of the Naomi chapter.

Eleanor is survived by her beloved husband of 72 years, Vernon Francis Huber of Lewes; her sons: Christopher Douglas Huber (Judy) of Fairfax, Va., Steven Walter Francis Huber of Milford and Daniel Melville Huber (Laura) of Wilmington; her grandchildren:  Stephanie Baker, Ashely Hayes, Matthew Huber, Jennifer Huber, and Pamela Huber; and her great-grandchildren: Maura, Sean, Rory and Carter.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 14, at 10 a.m.,, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 2nd Street, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 9 a.m.  Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Eleanor's memory to the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, DE  19958, or Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care, 30265 Commerce Drive, Suite 205, Millsboro, DE  19966.
