Exempt senior citizens from higher school tax

November 1, 2019

I am not totally against reassessment; 45 years is a long time. However, Sussex County seems to be OK with it financially. It is true that many people move to Delaware because of the low real estate tax, lack of sales tax and the fair income tax.

More residents help the economy, and the transfer tax helps the county and state.

My major concern is the school tax. Now, as a father of six, I am not opposed to a fair school tax. And I paid my school taxes in New York and Virginia. I, like many of my neighbors, do not have any schoolchildren.

We paid our taxes and it now time for the younger parents to do the same.

I expect a lot of ridicule from my very real suggestion that childless seniors be exempt from the school tax or at least be entitled to a large discount. If my memory serves me correctly, the school tax is quite  a bit higher than the house tax, and the total increased last year $100.

I am quite serious about this childless senior discount, and I am sure a lot of voters will be also.  If this proposed reassessment comes to fruition with a ridiculously high school tax, I and several of my other seniors will be visiting our county and state representatives.
