The overriding theme of the lead-up to the 2020 and 2021 elections for Lewes City Council was the need for change. Have Lewes voters seen the promised change?
The past two years have brought some very difficult and unforeseen issues to the city. This is not to disparage any one of these representatives, but to point out that with the new representation of four-fifths of council, big issues were not resolved to the satisfaction of many residents. At any point, the new representatives were in position to change the course.
The combined experience of the four current council representatives is less than six years.
In 2020, Tim Ritzert and Andrew Williams were elected in August. Carolyn Jones and Khalil Saliba were elected and sworn in during May 2021. None had previously served longterm on a Lewes committee. Recently, these four representatives, individually and collectively, completed their first complete budget cycle.
Ted Becker has 18 years of service and experience on city council, including eight years as mayor. Ted was elected and sworn in to city council in 2004. In 2011, he was appointed deputy mayor and treasurer, and in 2014, he was elected mayor. In these challenging and unsettled times, experienced leadership cannot be undervalued.
