Expert panel to discuss addiction issues May 10 at Lewes library
Attack Addiction is a grassroots group founded in 2013 in New Castle County with the mission to help people in recovery and their families find community as part of their journey.
Over the last seven years, organizers have been taking their mission statewide, hosting events like SoberFest in Sussex County, and establishing more community bonds and places where people can gain access to resources and information they need.
Attack Addiction will host a discussion panel from 1:30 to 3 p.m, Saturday, May 10, at Lewes Public Library. The goal is for families to be able to ask questions, engage in open discussion and gain access to resources. Doug Moore, Attack Addiction board member and event co-chair, said, “Our goal is to create an event where people can come and talk. We want them to meet leaders in the recovery world in their community, and get face-to-face with those who can help them navigate their journey through recovery and answer questions as well as provide meaningful contacts.”
The multidisciplinary discussion panel includes intervention specialists, substance abuse and mental health providers, Lewes Deputy Mayor Khalil Saliba and Ocean View Police Chief Kenneth McLaughlin. It will be led by Peggy Geisler from the Sussex County Health Coalition. Attendees will receive handout packets with information and resources.
Amy Rust, a Sussex County chapter leader and event co-chair, said, "When someone makes the all-important decision to get help, the next decision is what help, where and with whom. The first natural place to go is the internet, [but it] is often filled with sponsored ads that can create information overload.”
This event and discussion should help individuals and families manage the information overload and guide them to stay rooted with community-relevant information.
