Exploring What May Come After Death series starts Oct. 6 in Lewes

September 29, 2016

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware three-week discussion series on What Comes Next: Explorations into What May Come After Death is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursdays, Oct. 6 to 20 in Lewes. Dr. Len Bowman and Jeff Cordiano will moderate.

Bowman explains that people really don’t know what comes after death, if anything. But the world’s religious traditions are rich with images of some kind of afterlife. Over the past 40 years, hundreds of people who were clinically dead and then revived have experienced something after death, something that defies explanation. Moreover, many people have experienced memories that appear to come from a prior lifetime.

The discussion series will focus on the possibilities of what comes after death. The Oct. 6 session will explore near-death experiences - people who have been clinically dead and revived, and who described what happened to them while they were…dead. The second session  Oct. 13 will focus on reincarnation and the religious traditions of India, especially “The Tibetan Book of the Dead.” The theme of the last session Oct. 20 will be You Only Live Once. The presentation will show images of judgment, heaven and hell - including the literary descriptions in Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and the provocative art of Hieronymus Bosch.

Bowman, a member of the UUSD congregation, holds a doctorate in theology from Fordham University. He has taught philosophy and religion for over 30 years, and is currently teaching in the master of liberal arts program of Johns Hopkins University. Cordiano is a second-generation Unitarian and founding member of UUSD. He has a lifelong interest in world religions and spirituality with studies at Colgate University and the University of Maryland.

Advance registration is not required. A one-time $10 donation is requested for the course. The discussion series will be held at the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware church at 30486 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, Route 9, Lewes. For more information, go to www.uussd.org or contact Bowman at LenBowman@gmail.com or 443-286-3495.
