Temperatures are falling, which means it must be state tournament time for Delaware sports.
Volleyball kicked off postseason play Nov. 4, with the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association releasing state tournament brackets for field hockey and soccer Nov. 5.
Volleyball
In volleyball action, No. 21 Cape lost to 12th-seeded Caesar Rodney 25-17, 19-25, 25-8, 25-23 in the opening round Nov. 4. No. 11 Sussex Central moved into the next round with a 25-15, 25-23, 25-19 win over 22nd-ranked Lake Forest. The Golden Knights will play at No. 6 Wilmington Friends Saturday, Nov. 6.
No. 8 Delmarva Christian earned a first-round bye and will host No. 9 Caravel Academy Nov. 6 in Georgetown. If victorious, the Royals will face the winner of No. 1 Saint Mark’s and No. 17 Tower Hill.
Field hockey
Cape earned the top seed in the eight-team Division I field hockey tournament. The Vikings will face No. 8 Dover at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, in Lewes. The winner of that game will play the winner of No. 4 Sussex Tech and No. 5 Polytech in the semifinals Tuesday, Nov. 16.
It’s no surprise Delmar is the top seed in the Division II field hockey tournament. The Wildcats earned a first-round bye in the 12-team tourney, and will face the winner of No. 8 Concord and No. 9 Caravel Saturday, Nov. 13.
Sussex Academy earned the fourth seed in the Division II tournament. The Seahawks will play the winner of No. 5 Tatnall and No. 12 Delaware Military Academy Nov. 13.
Cape and Delmar are set to face off for the Henlopen Conference Championship at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, at Sussex Academy.
Soccer
In soccer, No. 8 Cape will travel to top-seeded Caesar Rodney Wednesday, Nov. 10, for a Division I quarterfinal match. The victor will face the winner of No. 4 Sussex Central and No. 5 St. Georges.
In Division II, Henlopen South winner Indian River earned the third seed and will host the winner of No. 6 McKean and No. 11 Delmar Saturday, Nov. 13.
No. 10 Sussex Academy will travel upstate to Abessinio Stadium to face No. 7 Archmere in the opening round Tuesday, Nov. 9.
Indian River and Caesar Rodney are set to face each other for the Henlopen Conference crown Saturday, Nov. 6, at Sussex Academy following the field hockey championship.
Football
Football’s regular season will continue through Friday, Nov. 12, with playoffs beginning the following weekend and running through Saturday, Dec. 11. The championship games, including unified flag football, will be played at the University of Delaware.
Cross country
The Henlopen Conference Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 6, at Killens Pond State Park, with the DIAA Championships set for Saturday, Nov. 13, at Brandywine Creek State Park.
