Ferrying across the Chesapeake to get to the beach

October 27, 2020

Gary Myers of Rehoboth Beach sent this photo in recently showing vehicles in 1952 getting off the Matapeake ferry that brought travelers across Chesapeake Bay before the first span was built across the bay. Gary said this photo was one of several - one of which showed the new bridge under construction - taken on a family trip to the Delmarva beaches. “While these are not ‘local’ pictures, they remind me of how isolated the beaches here were before the bridge. Something to think about during this pandemic.”
