February 7, 2023

An electrical malfunction caused a fire Feb. 5 resulting in $100,000 in damage to a townhome and five other units.

The fire was reported about 8 p.m. at the end of a row of townhomes in the Watergate complex on Elgin Drive, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

Firefighters with Carlisle Fire Co., Houston, Frederica, Ellendale, and Slaughter Beach responded to the scene working for two hours to contain the fire to the garage, where officials say it started.

The fire damaged a three-story occupied home and caused exposure damage to five other units, Chionchio said. Several residents were displaced and are getting assistance from the American Red Cross.
