Fire in Hawkseye causes $400,000 damage

Deputy fire marshals determine that blaze starts inside car in the garage

A fire at a home in the Hawkseye community in Lewes was caused by mechanical malfunction of a running vehicle inside the home’s attached three-car garage, according to the Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Deputy fire marshals ruled the fire accidental.

Dozens of volunteer firefighters from Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Milton and Indian River responded to the fire reported at 6:57 p.m. at 35567 Peregrine Road.

When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of all three sections of the garage and had spread to the second floor of the house. Deputy fire marshals estimated the damage at $400,000.

Sussex County paramedics responded to the fire and Bethany Beach firefighters were on standby.
