Fireworks blast in Lewes sky

Thousands of people flocked to Lewes for the third annual Go Fourth Lewes fireworks July 4. The 30-minute show could be seen from all over town, with people sitting on the beach, standing on the canal drawbridge, relaxing in Canalfront Park and even dropping a chair along Savannah Road. 

It was an exclamation point on the end of a long slate of events in town Sunday, beginning with the annual boat parade at 2 p.m., and continuing with the Doo-Dah Parade at 5. Out of an abundance of caution, the children’s games were not held this year.

“I was disappointed that the kids’ games didn’t start out the day, but being able to stage the two parades and the fireworks was so wonderful,” said Betsy Reamer, executive director of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce. “Watching the joy of the 3-year-old in front of me running to pick up the lollipops thrown at him during the Doo-Dah parade (his first) and hearing the cheers from the people watching the boat parade and on the beach as the fireworks culminated, was very special after missing them last year.”

Mayor Ted Becker said he was happy the city was in a position to be able to again provide traditional activities. 

“While I regret that were not able to host the kids’ games, I believe that everyone enjoyed the boat parade, the Doo Dah Parade and, of course, the fireworks display,” he said. “With picture-perfect weather and the community filled with residents and visitors, it was great to see that people were having a terrific time and yet still being respectful of others. I thank everyone for their cooperation, which enabled us to have a wonderful July 4th celebration.”
