First reassessment, then school referendum

May 17, 2024

As a concerned citizen and taxpayer within the Cape Henlopen School District, I feel compelled to express my strong opposition to the upcoming referendum. While I understand the importance of supporting our schools, I believe that the proposed measures are not the right solution for our community at this time.

There is a lack of transparency in terms of what the average taxpayer will actually be paying. The vote is being rushed before we receive our revised home assessment values from the county in November. The proposed increase would be based on that new assessed value, not the current value.

The district’s online calculator is entirely misleading, as it is based on current assessed value. My wife and I both will vote no on any referendum for a school tax increase until I know how much I will be paying.
