First State Community Action Agency boosting resumes in Sussex County

Job fair held on site following resume workshop
November 3, 2022

Students and prospective employees received a helping hand from First State Community Action Agency Oct. 22.

Moderators Jennifer Thompson and Dr. Thomas Maguire taught lessons and performed practice exercises for participants to show examples of what employers are looking for during interviews. Thompson, an academic coach, detailed why it is important to deliver a firm handshake while making eye contact and being an active participant during interviews.

Maguire conducted a mock interview with Thompson to highlight how poorly an interview can go if someone is not prepared. The workshop showed students and participants what can happen if one were to enter an interview unprepared. In addition to advising against poor behaviors, Maguire and Thompson said it is important to ask questions while being interviewed to make sure the job is a good fit for their needs.

Equipped with tips and suggestions, students and prospective employees were able to try their new set of skills during the job fair portion of the workshop. Responsible College Advocates, Georgetown Police Department, Delaware Technical Community College, Delaware State University, Homewatch Caregivers, Career TEAM Delaware, the U.S. Army, and host First State had tables to discuss opportunities.

Following the job fair, First State provided lunch from Chick-fil-A and Little Caesars.
