First State Community Action Agency held a luncheon for the agency's Senior Companions Oct. 22. The event was also a retirement celebration for First State's Senior Companion Program Manager Gerry Horsey. Senior companions are volunteers who provide assistance and friendship to seniors and other individuals who have difficulty with daily living tasks.
The service they provide helps others live independently in their homes. Senior companions are at least 55 years of age, meet income eligibility requirements, and volunteer 20 hours per week. Eligible Senior Companions earn a small tax-free stipend to cover the cost of serving.
They also receive reimbursement for transportation, sick, vacation and holidays. Volunteers are required to have an annual physical and they also receive supplemental accident and liability coverage while they are serving.
