Fondue opens in Milford

Restaurant anchors collective in historic Penney Square building
April 27, 2023

The creators of EasySpeak in Milford have opened a new downtown restaurant serving up gourmet cheeses and chocolates.

Fondue, located at 39 N. Walnut St., is the creation of Zack and Marissa King, and is the last step in their complete renovation of the Penney Square building into a commercial complex with small shops and a restaurant.

Marissa said the vision for Fondue came from when the Kings went to a similar type of restaurant and thought it would be the perfect fit for what they were trying to do with Penney Square. She said she envisions Fondue as a place where families can be brought together.

The main attractions are, of course, the cheese and chocolate fondue. Customers can order a fondue that serves two people or an entrée that can serve four. Each cheese fondue bowl is accompanied by a baguette, Granny Smith apples, broccoli florets, carrots, celery, pretzel bites and fingerling potatoes. Chocolate fondue desserts are paired with fruits, Rice Krispie treats, sweet cakes and bites, cookies and marshmallows. The menu also has a selection of craft beer and cocktails using EasySpeak spirits.

Of locating the restaurant right in the heart of Milford’s commercial district, Marissa said, “We have made Milford our home, owning multiple buildings and businesses down there. We wouldn’t do it anywhere else.”

She said the Southwest-style cheese fondue bowl has been a popular dish so far.

“Everyone seems so excited and happy with their experiences,” Marissa said. “Of course we are still working out kinks, but that’s to be expected.”

The Kings purchased the Penney Square building in early 2021 with the idea of developing it into a mixed-use space. They also purchased the former M&T Bank building at the corner of Walnut and Front streets, which has existed in the center of downtown Milford for more than 100 years. It was purchased to become a Touch of Italy location in 2016, but those plans fell through and the building was put back up for sale in 2019 until the Kings bought it in December 2021.

Marissa said there has not been any progress on the former M&T Bank building yet, as they have been working to finish the Penney Square project first.
