Fun in the sun with the Cape Gazette in St. John

February 8, 2023

Pat and Ron Schaeffer take the Cape Gazette wherever they travel. In the second week of December 2022, they carried the Gazette to the beautiful Caribbean island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Pat and Ron are shown here from a hill overlooking the famous Trunk Bay and beach, which is part of the Virgin Islands National Park on the north shore of St. John. Trunk Bay is named after the leatherback turtle, locally known as Trunks. It is considered one of the top ten beaches in the world for swimming and snorkeling. However, in early December strong rip currents and high surf from an Atlantic storm limited the snorkeling. The islands beyond Trunk Bay in the photo are Great Thatch Island and Jost Van Dyke, both part of the British Virgin Islands just off St. John’s north coast. St. John is unique in that two-thirds of the island is a national park providing extensive hiking trails and public beach access throughout most of the island.
