Gallery 37 in Milford to hold poetry reading and art opening Oct. 20

Marcia Reed, owner of Gallery 37 in downtown Milford, will host a poetry reading at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, at 10 S. Walnut St., Milford. The reading is being held in conjunction with an art opening featuring impressionist works.

Featured poets are Nancy Mitchell of Salisbury, Md.; Richard Peabody of Arlington, Va.; and Jane Miller of Wilmington.

Mitchell is a 2012 Pushcart Prize winner and the author of three volumes of poetry, the latest being “The-Out-of-Body Shop.” She teaches at Salisbury University and serves as associate editor of special features for Plume Poetry. She leads Writing for Wellness workshops for those grieving the loss of loved ones, particularly to the opioid crisis. She is co-editor of Plume Interviews 1.

Peabody is the founder and remaining editor of Gargoyle Magazine, and editor or co-editor of 25 anthologies including “Mondo Barbie” and “A Different Beat.” Peabody taught at Johns Hopkins University for 15 years. His most recent book is “The Richard Peabody Reader,” and his next book of poems, “Guinness on the Quay,” is forthcoming from Salmon Poetry in 2019.

Miller’s poetry has appeared in Iron Horse Literary Review, Summerset Review, Pittsburgh Poetry Review and elsewhere. She was awarded a fellowship grant from Delaware Division of the Arts, and her work has been nominated for Best New Poets, and for Best of the Net. She was a finalist in the 2017 Red Wheelbarrow Poetry Contest and the 2018 Florence C. Coltman Award. She has a book, a collaborative effort with three other poets, due out in 2019.

Featured exhibit artists are Ruth Keipp of Lewes; Dorothy Ganek of South Orange, N.J.; and Lee Wayne Mills of Rehoboth Beach.

Keipp, originally from Iowa, was a photojournalist after gaining her master of arts degree in journalism from the University of Iowa. Much of her early photographic work demonstrates her lifelong love of abstract imagery. She began to paint on canvas in 2015 to pursue her focus on the abstract use of color, space and composition.

Ganek was born in Greece. She creates her abstract work recalling childhood Mediterranean experiences and her present everyday environment. She uses non-objective shapes and gestural marks to tell her story. Her work is in many corporate and private collections. She is a member of the American Watercolor Society, Princeton Art Association and Salmagundi Club.

Mills has a bachelor of arts degree with honors in art from Ripon College in Wisconsin. As an art administrator, he has held positions as director of exhibitions at Maryland Hall in Annapolis, assistant director of Montpelier Cultural Art Center in Laurel, Md., and interim executive director of Rehoboth Art League. He worked with the architects and City of Gaithersburg, Md., to develop the Gaithersburg Art Barn in Kentlands. As an artist, his work has been shown in galleries up and down the East Coast and as far west as Texas, and is included in numerous public and private collections.

Immediately following the reading, there will be a reception for the poets and artists at Gallery 37, 8 S. Walnut St., Milford. The public is welcome to both events.
