Geneva Academy seeking funds to transport flagpole

February 13, 2015

Tranquility Farm Equestrian and Renewal Center, a 501c3 Christian Charity on 34 acres in Culpeper, Va., is shutting its doors after more than 13 years of service and hopes to transfer its 28-foot commercial-grade flagpole and a few remaining items to Geneva Academy in Lincoln. The problem is neither organization has a truck capable of transporting the long flagpole.

I offered the flagpole to Geneva Academy after recently meeting Geneva Academy Headmaster James Dundas. I am a nativeborn Lincoln resident who has returned in retirement to my place of birth, and was overjoyed that our area is rewarded with a Christian school based upon the classical education model.

The small but growing Geneva Academy has 44 students (Dover 13, Milford 18, Lewes two, Milton two, Greenwood eight, and Laurel one) in grades from kindergarten through high school. The students come from all over Delaware. The academy provides a rigorous academic program with focus on studying original works and contributions in the development of our knowledge and culture. Science, logic, math and Latin are among critical areas of study.

A Fulbright Scholar, I am familiar with the Geneva model and knew that it provided a superior education. I base my view on 37 years of teaching in rigorous graduate school programs as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science and The John Hopkins University. The tough analytical courses in applied math and statistics, and the other courses requiring clear, logical thinking really tested graduate student abilities.

I made sure to learn my students’ education background the first day of class. The home schooled students and students who studied under rigorous models like Geneva Academy’s program were consistently at the top of the class.

Hoping I can stimulate sufficient interest to transport the flagpole and pay for some needed welding, Shawn Dunlap, Geneva Academy administrative officer, who is a retired Air Force first sergeant, wants to invite the Dover Air Force Base Honor Guard to be present to assist Geneva Academy students in raising the flag for the first time at its new location. Dunlap said, “Our school wants every student wellgrounded in the proper display and handling of the American flag.”

Dundas said the academy would like the public to attend the brief flag-raising ceremony on a Friday afternoon to be announced and then join students and faculty at an open house reception to follow.

Geneva Academy is located at 11146 Ponder Road, Lincoln, DE 19960. If you wish to support this project, the school can be contacted at 302-500-2087, or info@genevaacademyofde.com.

Editor’s Note: Dr. Leon (Lee) Transeau and Dr. Gail Transeau, a psychotherapist, established a trust which led to the opening of Tranquility Farm as a Christian charity that provided professional therapy to returning combat veterans, children suffering from cancer, and others suffering from serious disabling illnesses. They also cared for horses of servicemen while they served in combat positions overseas. Now well into their 70s, Lee and Gail are wanting to retire to engage in other pursuits.
