A Georgetown man faces resisting arrest and DUI charges after a traffic stop July 2 near Millsboro.

A trooper on patrol at 12:12 a.m. observed a black 2012 Volkswagen Jetta speeding on eastbound Mount Joy Road near Oak Street, then swerving off the road and into the grass after turning onto southbound Hollyville Road, said Sr. Cpl. Leonard DeMalto of the Delaware State Police.

The trooper conducted a traffic stop and determined the driver, Miguel Santos-Chavez, 23, was impaired and smelled of alcohol, DeMalto said. When the trooper tried to take Santos-Chavez into custody for DUI, he gave police a false name and birthday, DeMalto said, before running away into a field. During a foot chase, he said, Santos-Chavez fell and continued to resist arrest on the ground. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Santos-Chavez was taken to Troop 4 and charged with felony resisting arrest with force or violence, criminal impersonation, criminal mischief, driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, and other traffic offenses. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $3,100 cash bond.
