The fourth annual Wings & Wheels, A Georgetown Fall Festival is ready to roll. The Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, the Delaware Aviation Museum and Lower Delaware Mustang Club, along with premier sponsors, Northrop Grumman, Del-One and Southern Delaware Tourism, are hosting Sussex County’s only “fly in” of vintage planes and classic car show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Sussex County Airport in Georgetown.
Attendance has nearly doubled every year since this festival debuted in 2008, according to Karen Duffield, executive director of the Georgetown chamber. “Wings & Wheels 2010 attracted nearly 8,000 people,” said Duffield, “and we’ve expanded the event this year to include a USO-styled Stage Door Canteen show and catered dinner Friday evening, Sept. 30, so we expect even more people will enjoy the festivities in 2011!”
In addition to the World War II aircraft expected to fly in for viewing, and the huge car show on Saturday, live entertainment from the popular Bo Dickerson Band, kids’ games, as well as many craft and food vendors will also be on hand.
The very special and poignant World War II “Living History” program which premiered in 2010 will return again this year, with local author and journalist James Diehl screening his award-winning video, “Vanishing Voices of World War II.” Diehl says that this may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some to hear these World War II veterans. “Help us honor these incredible heroes, and listen to their first-hand accounts of war,” said Diehl. “I urge you to attend the Wings & Wheels festival as we pay tribute to the humble warriors who sacrificed so much so many years ago. Their stories must be heard, their voices kept alive for generations to come.”
A program and exhibit on Fort Miles is planned and World War II re-enactors will set-up encampments again this year, with memorabilia on display to compliment the many vintage airplanes expected to fly in. Rides for purchase will be available on select planes by individual reservation, and are listed on www.wings-wheels.com.
The Lower Delaware Mustang Club organizes the “Wheels” part of the festival with a car show that last year had over 250 registrations. The 2011 event is expected to bring in even more of the classic roadsters and award-winning models. Denny Orem, president of the club said, “If the weather cooperates, we could see over 300 cars register this year.”
Additional event sponsors include Anchor Enterprises, CAT Country, Fulton Bank, Delmarva Power, The Insurance Market, Lighthouse Landing Restaurant, NRG Energy Plant, Servpro of Sussex County, Sussex County Council, Tyndall’s Construction, Wal-Mart, Brandywine Assisted Living, Bayhealth Medical Group, and Wilmington University.
