Gerald Dickens returns for ‘A Christmas Carol’ performance Dec. 9

The Lewes Public Library Spoken Word Society will ring in the holiday season with two events featuring Charles Dickens’ classic tale “A Christmas Carol,” Wednesday, Dec. 7 and Friday, Dec. 9.

Returning to Lewes following last year’s sold-out performance, Charles Dickens’s great-great-grandson Gerald Dickens will delight audiences with a one-man performance of “A Christmas Carol” at 7 p.m., Dec. 9, in the Cape Henlopen High School theater, 1250 Kings Highway, Lewes.

Using his own adaptation of the classic Christmas tale, Dickens will play over 30 characters using his exceptional vocal and physical talents to bring each scene vividly to life.

In advance of the performance, Dr. Iain Crawford, English professor at the University of Delaware and former president of the Dickens Society, will present a fascinating look at the history and enduring charm of “A Christmas Carol” at 5 p.m., Dec. 7, at the Lewes Public Library. In a talk titled “Dickens and Christmas: A Christmas Carol in its Time and for Our Time,” Crawford will discuss what led Dickens to write the book, why it struck a chord with Victorian readers, and what makes it such a continuing presence during the holiday season around the world.
