Gertrude Schmidt, Reflections on a life well lived

July 2, 2020

Gertrude Schmidt, 71, of Milton passed away peacefully, following a courageous battle with cancer, Sunday, June 28, 2020, at her home surrounded by those who loved her.  She was born Feb. 25, 1949, in Suffern, N.Y., daughter of the late Kurt F. and Gertrude (Emrich) Bauch.

Gertrude started her career as an EKG technician at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N.J., and retired as the billing manager for Town Medical Associates in Verona, N.J.  She enjoyed an unrivaled professional reputation for her exceptional knowledge of medical insurance, but more importantly, she was widely respected for her courtesy and commitment given to patients during their time of need.

After 37 dedicated years in the medical field, Gertrude retired to Milton in 2009, and instantly become a pillar within the Holland Mills community.  She was well known for frequently helping her neighbors and volunteered at the local CHEER Center by preparing meals for those unable to cook for themselves.

Gertrude met and married her soulmate later in life.  What they lacked in time, they made up for with love.  In 25 short years, they loved a lifetime.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.  At five feet tall, Gertrude may have been slight in stature, but she was larger than life in person.

Gertrude is survived by her beloved husband, Mark S. Schmidt.  A devoted mother, she leaves behind a loving son, John (Camille) and cherished daughter, Melissa.  Gertrude was the matriarch of an extended family that includes her stepson, Mark (Alexis) and stepdaughter Michelle (Matt).  She showered an immeasurable amount of love on her 10 grandchildren: John, Paul, Taylor, Jordyn, Tommy, Dominick, Nicholas, Xavier, Isabelle and Asher.  Gertrude will be mourned by her second family of devoted “Lower Slower” friends who include:  Jeannie, Carol Ann, Marie, Adrianna, Joyce, Sandy, Betsy, Ginny, Jimmy, Lidel, Tony, John and Bill.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 15, at 2 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Gertrude’s memory to Delaware Hospice, recognizing the dedication of the nursing and support staff that showered Gertrude with kind and tender care: 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE  19963.
